What I Did Over My Summer Vacation (besides get a haircut)
I got antsy and frustrasted with the kind of bodywork I'd gotten accustomed to, and I desperately needed to do something different. Added Value (the parent organization of the Red Hook Farm) had teamed up with Red Hook Initiative, Parks and Recreation, and the local Senior Center to facilitate a grant to combat obesity. They've dubbed the program "Red Hook Walks the Talk", and devised several walking groups that culminate at the farm with cooking demos, a learning center, coupns for free produce, free recipes...and now me!!!
Honestly, it's a blast. The atmosphere at the farm is always uplifting for me. The tent provides shade, there's usually a breeze coming from the harbor, and I've truly enjoyed getting to know new folks from the community. I am also becoming well acquainted with the challenges that accompany diabetics and the care of their extremities (particularly feet). Diabetes (and asthma) are scourges of the Red Hook community.
Some folks' feet actually seem to be improving with regular massage; don't know if it's improved circulation, or the healing power of unrefined shea butter. Of course the combined influences of "Red Hook Walks the Talk" could be creditted. We've had some great reports of weight loss.
Unfortunately, I am also learning about the healthcare challenges of our working poor. I've met several people who are working part time jobs, no longer eligible for Medicaid and can not otherwise afford medical care. I have no quick fixes for them, but I am gathering medical resources to give them.
All-in-all, I have discovered that reflexlogy (foot massage with acupressure) is a wonderful alternatve aveunue for both outreach and fact gathering. Let's see what transpires.
Be Well, Debra
